California has done more to push marijuana into the mainstream than anywhere else in America. While federal laws still treat cannabis as an illegal drug, local regulations for medical marijuana let doctors prescribe pot for just about anything and a booming industry has grown to serve the new demand marijuana is the major cash crop in the heat of Northern California’s “Emerald Triangle”, where it accounts for up two-thirds of the local economy, and dispensaries can be found all over the state. The city of Oakland has become a modern marijuana Mecca, complete with a school in proper groing techniques and a special cannabis excuse tax approved with overwhelming majority by its residents.
Recently the marijuana craze got a huge boost when US Attorney General Eric Holder promised not to raid pot stores and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said it was time to debate the idea of regulating cannabis.
In next year elections, California residents mighth be asked to vote for legalizing pot outright in order to boost tax revenue. Regulating an estimated $14 billion marijuana trade could in fact bring in much needed money to the flat broke pockets of the Golden State. Are stars aligning for the pro-web movement in California?
